Aortic Stenosis

Aortic stenosis is a condition where the aortic valve in the heart narrows. The narrowing makes it harder for blood to flow from the heart’s left ventricle into the aorta and onward to the rest of the body. This narrowing forces the heart to work harder to pump blood, which can weaken the heart over time.

Aortic stenosis can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Congenital defects: Some people are born with a defective aortic valve, such as a bicuspid valve (having two leaflets instead of three).
  • Calcium buildup: As people age, calcium can accumulate on the aortic valve, causing it to stiffen and narrow.
  • Rheumatic fever: This condition can lead to scarring of the valve, further narrowing it.

Symptoms can include chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, and fainting, especially during physical activity. Severe cases may require valve repair or replacement.
